“Pacific Rim” opens in theaters all over the world later this summer. This show has kept a significant part of our studio busy for a long time and we’re very happy to finally being able to let you know why we’ve been so quite for so long.

For now, we obviously can’t show you any of our work but hopefully we will once the movie is out – until then, here’s the most recent trailer – this will be one to watch! :

The deadline was tough but the project looked really cool with loads of cartoony character animation, so we jumped on board.The film had to fit with anexisting campaign and to a large extent we were able to use pre existing models and environments which speeded up the process significantly.

The biggest challenge apart from the tight schedule was the wave of oranges which was handled with some clever coding and some long simulation cycles.
Our team and the client worked really hard to get this ready in time for the deadline and we hope you like the result.

The movies are part of a major product launch and will be broadcast in North America, Germany, France and Asia. Not only was this a worldwide campaign with a very high priority for the agency and client, but the films were made extra challenging due to the fact that the Galaxy camera was still under development. This caused numerous changes to screen graphics, icons and edit during post production.

Everybody involved, however, worked really hard towards reaching the finish line and we think the films have turned out really nice.
All post was handled here in Copenhagen, with Ghost VFX creating screen insert, VFX and 3D packshots. Our neighbours, Freezone, did the sound and Cameo Film did the additional effects and grading.

In total we completed 106 shots and we have made a compilation of some of the visual effects that we created. Apart from loads of blood effects, we also created digital doubles falling into CG ravines and waterfalls and we did loads of flying CG arrows, matte paintings to improve the already amazing Norwegian landscape, painting out ski resorts in background plates and much, much more. We are already busy working on the next feature for Fante Film, “Ragnarok”, an ambitious action adventure and look forward to telling more about this in the future.

Our work consisted of creating a 3d factory including wooden robot arms, “old school” machines, flour bags, barrels and miscellaneous 3d props that had to blend seamlessly with the live-action shoot of actors in front of green screens. The shoot took place in Latvia, editing in Copenhagen and all post at Ghost.

You can see the final film below which we created by hand drawing a number of illustrations emphasizing important points on a white board and shooting them as separate pieces. Afterwards we combined all the drawings in the computer in order to create one continuous flow of drawings and in some cases even animated them in order to add a little extra fun to the film. The film was directed by Claus Kogsbøll while our concept artist Vaidas Bagonas did all the concepts and drawings.

For the first films the snails had a very distinct claymation look with deliberate fingerprints on the surface while actually being rendered in 3D. Now they are rendered out more smoothly without thumbprints but with the very danish humor intact.
